September 2010 Intake: We are delighted to find we are already receiving enquiries from parents of boys who received their acceptance letters this week and will be joining us in September. We have one enquiry from a parent in Maidenhead who would like to contact other Maidenhead area Reading School parents with a view to organising a school bus. If you are interested, please provide your details on the Contact Us page and we will forward them on. [SD]
Class Rep System: The class rep system set up by the Parents’ Association (RSPA) is a great way for parents of boys in the same form to get to know one another. The benefits are both practical (for example, arranging lift sharing and finding out about forgotten homework) and social.
A group of 14 parents of boys in 7S recently met up for a meal in an Italian restaurant in Reading. Most of had not met before but had a very enjoyable evening getting to know each other and comparing notes on our sons’ experiences at the school. We decided that we’d like to arrange regular events in future, probably once a term. [AH]
Barn Dance: Big School was the venue for the Parents’ Association Barn Dance in January, when more than a hundred would-be dancers crammed into the hall in eager anticipation. The band, Hullabaloo, quickly set toes tapping with their lively music on fiddle, banjo and bass, and before long the first brave barn dancers stepped onto the dance floor to do-si-do their partners. The first session whirled past in a succession of left-hand stars, promenades and arches. Dancing skill ranged from very impressive to keen-but-hopeless but the caller did his best to keep us all in step.
After a break for a tasty supper of baked potatoes and the drawing of the raffle we took to the floor again to strip the willow and swing our partners. The band played faster and faster, and there was great hilarity as befuddled dancers were grabbed by waiting partners, swung around by the elbow and propelled blindly onwards. Chaos was narrowly averted.
It was a fun night and as Mr Weeds pointed out, the august gentleman who has gazed down from the wall for almost 150 years had never seen anything like it. [AH]
